Muds of Abiquiu
Muds of Abiquiu
I joined the Northern California Women’s Caucus for the Arts, retreat at Ghost Ranch, Georgia O’Keefe’s home for over 50 years. Looking around with awe at the landscape I was seeking some sort of ghost, hiding in the giant rocks and mountains, with paleontological bones rattling below, as discovered in the local museum.
The colors of the earth, sky, open vistas I found myself trying to get beyond nature, I saw dirt and mud everywhere and was inspired to use the mud instead of paint to portray the rocks, creating textural, multi-media drawings on paper 24” x 18”.
Thoughts of Models
Drawing models who sit before me, I enjoyed making up their thoughts included some 2 or 3 years later with my Royal Typewriter. Playing with the importance of words vs. bodies, Which draws our attention first?
First I do a 3 hour gestural study of a model, drawn on paper 24” x 18” with pencil or charcoal, then later I manually typing into this landscape around the model, surrounding her with text, musings, playing with the competition of bodies with text, giving conflicting attention.
